Convicts.—The following convicts have been removed trom York Castle within the last fortnight, to undergo their respective sentences of transportation, as under: … On board the Ganymede Hulk, ship at Woolwich – Thos. Bateman, … for 14 years; … Halifax Guardian, 1 Dec 1832.




27/10/1832 Sheffield Independent, South Yorkshire, England: Thomas Bateman and John Haslam, charged with stealing at Sheffield, a quantity of forks, the property of Wm. Sanderson and John Mirfin. Bateman transported fourteen years ; Haslam imprisoned six months. 1839: TOL Maitland 19/1/1842: Admitted to Newcastle Gaol. Sent by Edward Denny Day for disorderly conduct – TOL to be cancelled. 4/3/1842: TOL cancelled for disorderly conduct. (Edward Denny Day was a Police Magistrate, Commission of Court Requests for Patrick Plains, County Commissioner for taking of Affidavits and bail etc, also a JP. In 1848 he had an estate of 75,000 acres named ‘Aberfoil’ in the Armidale area of NSW). 17/8/1843: Married Ellen Herring (Sarah and Eliza 1837) – they had 10 children. 1842: TOL Illawarra 19/11/1846: COF 1858-60’s: Lived in the Wollongong area – fined for being drunk and using bad language – also tried for stealing a watch and then selling it on – both he and the prosecutor were drunk at the time – charge dismissed. 2/2/1895: Thomas’s death was registered at Bulli, NSW. Ellen died 1887, aged 64 at Woonona, NSW.
