At the Quarter Sessions of the Peace for this county, held at Cockermouth, on Monday last, William Sprawl and Eleanor Bates were each sentenced to seven years transportation: the former for furnishing the prisoners in our jail with instruments to facilitate their escape; and the latter (convicted on her own confession) for stealing a cloak. Carlisle Journal, 16 Jan 1802.
