John's parents were Thomas Bates & Hannah Farmer. They came from Shropshire in England. Married Eliza Jane Rae in 1844. They had 11 children and lived on John's allotted 40 acres outside O'Connell. The children's names were: Thomas, James, John, David, George, Ernest, Sarah, Rebecca, Robert, and Emma.
Bathurst NSW, Australia John was granted permission to marry by the government. This was necessary as he was convicted at Stafford Afsizes and sentenced to life.
