This Thomas (Bates) has Contributions similar to the Thomas (Bates NEPTUNE 1790) & there are mentions in Smees records that conflict with the same person, especially having children with Ann (Griffin). Furthermore, information from Ref:'Colonial Regiment...', which can be regarded as definitive, provides further conflictions. So at this stage, the interpretation given in this Contribution for Thomas (Bates ADMIRAL BARRINGTON 1791) is offerred for consideration. Family connections for Thomas (Bates) are: BATES THIS WEBSITE SHOWS: 2 (perhaps 4) Thomas (Bates) may be the husband of Ann (Griffin): A Thomas (Bates) was tried at Warwick Assizes Warwickshire, sentenced to 14years & would have arrived in NSW as a convict on 9 7 1791 after a voyage of 6months on Fleet ship ADMIRAL BARRINGTON. He married in 1800 in Sydney & produced 10children. He was sent to Port Dalrymple Tasmania with Paterson)s company in 1804. He was granted another 50acres at Parramatta in 1806. In 1807 he was detached to (Johnston)s company, in 1808 to (Piper)s company & to (Steele)s company as a corporal & granted 13.5rods at Back Row Sydney. In 1810 he was a sergeant. In May 1810 he returned to UK as part of the disbandment of NSW Corps, at which time he was demoted for 1month. He returned to NSW. He died in 1836 in Sydney. Noted he is recorded in Port Dalrymple in 1804 & 1805. The marriage in 1800 & the existence of up to 10children at appropriate times indicate a link to Smees recordngs below. .. He was tried for stealing boots of Edward (Bell) at Old Bailey on 7 5 1788, sentenced to 7years, held probably at London/Middlesex Gaol Delivery & arrived in NSW as a convict on 26 6 1790 after a voyage of 7months on Fleet ship NEPTUNE; a voyage noted for extreme brutality of prisoners with a high death rate. He married Ann (Griffin age16) on 12 5 1800 at St Phillips CofE Sydney. He was granted land at Back Row off Sussex St Sydney in 1810. He retired from the army in 1817. He was recorded in 1828 at Bates Lane Sussex St with his family; he was a boat builder & had livestock; Mary (Kelly) was a lodger. He died on 17 12 1836 age about64 in Sydney.
