His wife Hanna McCarthy was born in London and arrived on The "Pyramus". There was another Johanna McCarthy from Ireland who married Thomas Green. The life sentence for John Batten is correct.




John Batten was 21 years old when transported for ‘Machine Breaking’. Father: James BATTEN (1780-1835) Mother: Ann TOSSLER (1781-) John was 5’9 ¼” tall, ruddy freckled complexion, light brown hair, grey eyes, raised mole opposite left side of left eye, married. 13/10/1837: Royal pardon warrant – also received a CP and AP but no dates given. 1852: Married Johannah/Hannah McCarthy (Hooghley 1831) Johannah had been previously married to Thomas Green “Albion 1828”. 10/1/1868: John died at Breakfast Ck, Lue, NSW of natural causes.
