1. The birth date given above is actually the date of his baptism at All Saints' Church, Holbeach, Lincolnshire. 2. John Bavin was the convict's real name; Johnson Edis was an alias used by him and his son, James, who was also to be transported in 1825 (and appears in this register) 3. The conviction was for sealing a fleece of wool and he was aided in this by his son, James, who at that time was given a sentence of six months imprisonment because he was only 14 years-old and probably had been misled by his father. John, however was sentenced to transportation for 7 years. Prior to departure John was lodged in the prison hulk 'Bellerophon'.
