Information taken from A Grim Almanac of Staffordshire (2014) by Karen Evans. ISBN 978-0-7524-9902-4, page 51: On 27 March 1832, in Fenton, Stoke-on -Trent, the body of Elizabeth Martin, 45, (match-seller) was found in a water filled pit. George Bailey (Bayley), then 32 years of age, was arrested and subsequently tried and convicted of her murder at Stafford Assizes in July 1832. Bailey was sentenced to hang, but this was commuted to transportation for life. Bailey was transported on the Asia in February 1833.
