Convict Notes
1832: On arrival in VDL, he was described as 21, single and a ploughman. However, he was assigned to the Engineer's Department as a rough carpenter (see https://stors.tas.gov.au/CON27-1-5$init=CON27-1-5). 1841, 3 March: Ticket of Leave. His ToL was withdrawn twice and then restored. 1848, 22 August: Conditional Pardon (see https://stors.tas.gov.au/CON34-1-3$init=CON34-1-3P439).
1831, 21 July: Convicted at Stafford for housebreaking. Described on his VDL Conduct Record as "an old offender" with a previous conviction "in 1819 for a felony - breaking into a counting house" - for which he served 12 months. [Note: Year of first felony should be checked as he would have been only 7 or 8 years old.] 1831, 27 September: Richard Bayliss, 19, was received aboard the prison hulk Cumberland, moored at Chatham. He was sent from there for transportation on 14 February 1832 (see UK, Prison Hulk Registers and Letter Books, 1802-1849).
