The Founders & Survivors web site record has INACCURATE information pertaining to the life of Anne BEAN, in that the convict woman from the Greenilaw, married a free man "James McKinnel" in 1860. Yes, there is a registration for an Anne Bean marrying James McKinnel and subsequent family BUT this Anne, she was the daughter of a free immigrant and NOT this convicted woman. She is listed under "Arrivals" as a child in the BEAN family. Disappointing that this research group just made an assumption based on the name only - source references do not mean that it is accurate. Definite proof from the family involved about this research. Let's hope Founders & Survivors corrects this and makes an apology to the family - who are not descended from a convict Anne Bean and that it does not confuse descendants of this woman, listed above.

The following inf is given, although not under the name Anne BEAN but Ann BAIN/BAYNE/BANE who it would appear is the one and same person, based on the following information: Marriage: 9 Dec 1850 - Ann BANE, full age, spinster to John CARLESS, full age, coachman at the Church of St. George, Hobart. (ref. 37/1/9 no. 330) Children: 4 Sept 1850 - John CARELESS born at Hobart. Father - John CARELESS, coachman. Mother - Ann CARELESS, formerly BAIN. (ref. 33/1/3 no. 2688A) 22 Feb 1854 - James Henry CARELESS born at Hobart. Father - John CARELESS, Cab Proprietor. Mother - Ann CARELESS, formerly BAIN. Argyle St. Hobart. (ref. 33/1/5 no. 629) When these two boys were admitted to the Queens Orphan School, in 1861, (parents in prison) the record states the mother is Ann BAIN/BAYNE per 'Greenlaw' and father is John CARELESS per 'Triton'. There is no record of any person under the name Bain or Bayne on the 'Greenlaw'. Ann's child, William BAIN, born at the Female Factory, Hobart 1847 died at age 3yrs on 10 Nov 1850 recorded as "William BAIN or CARELESS. Father given as John CARELESS or BAIN. Coachman's child. (ref. 35/1/3 no. 359 & Convict Conduct Record under name "Bean") 11 Dec 1860: Ann & John CARELESS were both charged with larceny, in a cab, and both sentenced to 6mths prison. This is when the two Careless boys were admitted to the Orphanage. (ref. report of crime in Trove newspapers, 12 Dec 1860 Mercury newspaper)

Application for Permission to Marry: 31 May 1845: Ann BEAN per 'Greenlaw' to George LANCASTER, free. (ref. 52/1/2) Does not appear to have proceeded. 31 Oct 1847: Anne BEAN per 'Greenlaw' to Benjamin TAYLOR, free. Approved. Does not appear to have proceeded. 16 Oct 1849: Anne BEAN per 'Greenlaw' to Benjamin TAYLOR, free. (ref. 52/1/3 ) No record of this proceeding, under this name.

Anne BEAN was convicted at Carlow, Ireland on 22 June 1843 for larceny - stealing linen. Convicted previously. Gaol Report: "bad". 7 yr transportation sentence. Sent to Van Diemen's Land (Tasmania) per the ship 'Greenlaw' arriving there 2 July 1844. Noted on record as "landed sick". Aged 23yrs; dairy maid; single woman; can read & write; Protestant. Place of birth: Queens County, Ireland (ref. Convict Indent record) Aunt: Winifred Connelly at native place in Ireland. VDL: Work services. Stationed at the 'Anson' hulk, River Derwent, Hobart. 6 mths probation period. 1845: refusing to work. 1 mth hard labour at the Female Factory, Hobart. 1846: absent. 2 mths hard labour at the Female Factory, Hobart. 26 March 1847: Delivered of a male child, William, at the Female Factory, Hobart. (ref. noted on convict conduct record) 14 Oct 1848: Ticket of Leave granted. 12 Dec 1848: Being in the stable for immoral purposes. 6 mths hard labour at the Female Factory, Hobart. 22 June 1850: Free Certificate issued. N.B. It is probable that this Anne BEAN was also indexed as Ann BAIN/BAYNE (perhaps due to pronunciation of her Irish name). An 'Ann BAIN/BAYNE' is linked to covict John CARLESS/CARELESS whom she married and already had a son William who later died aged 3 yrs. Further research is warranted.
