I am not a descendant of Ann Beard - just a volunteer researcher.

Ann was convicted at the Old Bailey, Middlesex, held at Newgate gaol.  Court date: 4 March 1839 Crime: Theft; pocket-picking:stealing monies, value 15 s.of Thomas Marks from his person. (for stealing, on the 4th of March, 5 half-crowns, 2 shillings, and 2 sixpences, the monies of Thomas Marks, from his person.)  Transported. Sentence transportation for then ( 10) yrs.

The transport ship ‘ Hindostan’ departed: 6th May 1839 and arrived at VA Diemen’s Land,  on 14 January 1839.  Ann’s age on arrival was 33-34yrs, spinster.   

Born 1806. Place of birth Edinburgh. Gender female. Height 5’ 0.5”. Hair brown (dark brown). Eyes hazel. Distinguishing marks pitted pockmarked, mark (pockmarked slightly). Has tattoo no. First recorded 1839.

TASMANIA: absconded eight (8) times between December 9th 1839 and 28th October 1842.
Applied to marry James Humphries in September 1843. Marriage date 14 October 1843, Hobart, Tasmania. 

AS yet I have not been able to locate Ann’s parents.

PLEASE NOTE: there are several convicts name Ann Beard, and each Ann Beard came out on a different ship, on a different date and to different ports.  So, please check the information carefully as some researchers have accidentally confused and posted incorrect information.

Ann Beard was listed as 33 years old on arrival.

Native Place: Edinburgh.

Ann was a widow with 2 children, single, 5’ 0½” tall, dark brown hair, hazel eyes, slightly pockpitted.

This Offence: Stealing from a man 16/- once for wine transported for 7 years in the Peny 2 years & pardoned a Woman named Andrews {then} transported with me - served time in England.

Other Offences: Argus 31 May 1853: drunkenness; Argus 15 May 1855: pickpocketing; Argus 26 Sept 1855: ditto

14/10/1843: Married James Humphries (Argyle 1831). James was listed as 33 and Ann 32.

18/3/1844: TOL
15/1/1846: CP

29/8/1856: Ann died at the Melbourne Hospital of Hepatitis.

Possible death for James Humphries - Died 4/2/1879 at the Melbourne Benevolent Asylum, Hotham of Rheumatic gout, and paralysis - a widower, no children, aged 69.
