Samuel Beard was 24 years old on arrival in VDL and was transported for ‘Stealing black cloth’. Samuel was 5’6” tall, brown hair, grey eyes, freckled, married – wife and 1 child at Painswick, Gloucestershire. 7/9/1824: Absent from his lodgings after hours. 10/3/1825: Absent from church muster. 24/6/1825: Suspected of stealing a hat – to be sent to Maria Island. 13/5/1828: Married Rebecca Babington (daughter of Edward Babington (Phoenix 1824). They had 8 children. 11/1/1832: Retailing ginger beer without a licence – dismissed, no evidence. 18/10/1871: Samuel died at Hobart aged 74. 4/11/1871 The Mercury, Hobart: BEARD. —On the 18th October, 1871, at his residence 183, Macquarie-street, Mr. G. Samuel Beard, aged 74 years, after a long illness.
