Convict Notes
In May 1844 a store room at North Back of Canonongate was broken into and a large quantity of furniture and books (in storage) stolen. Criminal Officer Muholland and Sergeant Malony traced the stolen property to John Beatson, spirit dealer in the High Street. He and his wife were arrested and found in possession of numerous pawn-tickets. Enquiry revealed that whilst the owner (a widow living in Paris) further property had been stolen between December 1842 and November 1843. In Novenber 1844 the accused Beatson was convicted at the High Court of Justiciary and received transportation for 10 years - see Scotsman newspapers 25 May 1844 p2; 27 July 1844 p 3 and 9 November 1844 p 3 all on 'High Court of Justiciary' for arrest, deserted diet awaiting French witness and Trial.
