John BEGLEY was convicted at Dublin in Sept 1818. 7yr transportation sentence. Sent to NSW, Australia per the 'Bencoolen' then transferred to Van Diemen's Land (Tasmania) per the 'Admiral Cockburn' arriving Sept 1819. Aged 24 yrs; shoemaker; 5'6"; blue eyes; dk brown hair; sallow complexion. Native Place - Armagh Assignments in the Colony of VDL: 27 March 1820: neglect of duty. 25 lashes. 26 May 1820: steal of whale boat and sailing equipment in an attempt to abscond from Hobart Town. 200 lashes and recommended to be returned to New South Wales. (does not appear to be have transferred) 11 Dec 1821: absent from Road Gang Hut, at New Norfolk (Tas). To be confined in the watch house at night. 28 May 1822: Drunk & insolent to the Constable. 25 lashes. 18 Oct 1822: Drunk & disorderly. 25 lashes and confined to watch house at night. 7 Feb 1823: Assault on the Rev. Samuel Marsden with intent to commit a felony. 100 lashes & to be sent to Macquarie Harbour for the remainder of his sentence. (known for it's harsh treatment of convict servants and an outpost from main civilization) 5 April 1823: Not assisting the overseer to apprehend 7 prisoners. 25 lashes, commuted. 13 July 1824: Rioting & fighting. 25 lashes. Ticket of Leave granted. 17 July 1827: Drunk. Fined. 31 Aug 1825: Neglect of duty. Reprimanded.
