Convict Notes

Extensive Robbery. John Bell was indicted for burglary and robbery the shop of Mr. R. Shaw, watchmaker, Bridge-street, Belfast, in October. It will be recollected that Mr. Shaw’s shop was broken into, one hundred watches and upwards of 40 guineas were carried away. Most of the watches were afterwards got in the bank of ditch, in the inside of two worsted stockings, by some of the of the Rifles. Mr. Shaw and his brother proved the robbery, and identified a gold watch produced, and Mr. D. Moore, and the High Constable, of Randalstown, proved that prisoner brought the watch to his shop three days after the robbery, requesting it to be set; Mr. Moore, having seen the Advertisement of the robbery in the Newspapers, challenged the prisoner, who said he got the watch for 6 guineas from a person on the quay of Belfast.—- Guilty. The Learned Judge said the punishment for the robbery was death, but would be recommended to mercy, condition of being transported for life.
