Family connections for John (Bell) may be: BELL/BRIDGE Charles (Bridge) was born about 1765/78 perhaps in Manchester Lancashire & became a grocer. He had a marriage to ??? (???). In July 1817 he was sentenced to 1year prison at Lancashire relating to counterfeit money then was in & out of jail by July 1818. He was then tried for receiving counterfeit money at Lancaster Assizes Lancashire on 20 3 1819, sentenced to death commuted to Life & arrived in NSW as a convict on 27 1 1820 after a voyage of 4months on PRINCE REGENT. He apparantly associated with Mary (Bridge)-she may be the wife who preceded him from England. His wife was assigned to him in 1820. In 1822 he was assigned to Dr (Harris) at Parramatta & recorded in 1822 with his wife & daughter at Parramatta. In 1824 he requisitioned unsuccessfully for his son William Sloane to be brought to NSW. He had been a weaver when he died on 6 9 1826 age61 father of perhaps 3children & was buried at St Johns CofE Parramatta. [Some details taken from this Website] Charles (Bridge) & ??? (???) produced perhaps 3children-at least: 1.a John (Bell)-could he have denied his (Bridge family) connection for some reason?- was born about 1796-suggestions on this Website indicate he was John Bell (Bridge)-confirmed in Smees records. He was a cotton weaver when tried at Lancaster Assizes Preston Lancashire on 23 3 1816, sentenced to 14years & arrived in NSW as a convict on 5 10 1816 after a voyage of 5months on ELIZABETH; he was 5'3.75" apparantly ruddy complexion brown hair brown eyes. He was recorde ed in 1819 as employed in Government Lumber Yard & described as well conducted with an aged mother in the colony dependent on him. He was still in Government employ in 1821. He was given permission to marry Mary (Orr perhaps her second relationship) on 4 2 1822 & did so on 4 3 1822 at St Johns CofE Parramatta-with a Thomas Robert (Bridge) as a witness. He was recorded in 1822 as husband of Mary (Orr) in Sydney. He was recorded in 1828 at Botany as a weaver with his family &, perhaps, his supposed mother. ..[Some details taken from this Website] ..Mary (Orr) was born about 1798. She was tried in Cumberlandshire on 1 4 1819, sentenced to 7years, held at Cumberland gaol & arrived in NSW as a convict on 3 5 1820 after a voyage of 6.5months on JANUS. She was recorded in 1820 as servant to Mrs (Thompson). Smees records suggest she had a first marriage/relationship. She was recorded in 1822 as wife of J (Bell) in Sydney. She was recorded in 1828 at Botany with her family &, perhaps, her supposed mother in law. She was recorded in 1828 at Botany with her parents. ..2.William Charles (Bell) was born in 1827-this birth is also shown in Smees records to father John Bell (Bridge)/Mary (Orr)-& William's mother's surname is shown in Smees as (Bridge/Orr). He was recorded in 1828 at Botany with his parents. .. 2.Sarah Jane (Bridge) was born about 1802 in Lancashire & became a cotton weaver. She was tried for possession of a banknote at Lancaster Criminal Court Lent Assizes in Mar/Apr 1821, sentenced to 14years & arrived in NSW on 20 5 1822 after a voyage of 5months on MARY ANN/E; she was under the surgeons care for 2periods from 21 1 & 5 3 1822. She was Protestant 5'2" Fair complexion brown hair hazel eyes. She was sent to female factory at Parramatta & recorded there in 1822 & also recorded in 1822 with her father at Parramatta. She was variously recorded as Sarah & Jane. She had a first (1of3) relationship with Samuel (Higgs his first relationship). She was granted permission for second (2of3) marriage to Matthew (Finnegan his third marriage) on 1 8 1823, but may not have done so. She was assigned to William (Grose) shoemaker Parramatta after death of Matthew (Finnegan) in 1823. In September 1824 she was charged with drunkenness in service & returned to the female factory. She married thirdly James (Howarth) coachman/waggoner emancipist of Windsor on 15 9 1825 at St Phillips CofE Sydney. She is recorded in 1828 with her husband & son Edward at Sydney Rd Concord.
