Escape of Convicts —On Friday se’enight, stage coach, which conveying several convicts from city, stopped at an inn at Thatcham. The guards retired to the kitchen, to procure some tea, leaving two under keepers care of the felons, who were regaling on bread and cheese, when they contrived open one the windows of the room to which they were conducted, and two succeeded in effecting their escape. Bristol Mirror, 16 Aug 1817. Isaac Bennett one of the two convicts that made his escape from the guards were conducting him from this gaol to the hulks at Woolwich about three weeks since was by the exertions of Mr Humphris the keeper, retaken on Saturday night last and lodged in Newgate.
