Convict Notes
James Bent was born 1804, the son of George Bent and Amelia. Native Place: Lancashire. 19/2/1838: TOL 5/1/1838, 15/1/1838, 1/4/1838, 9/6/1838, 20/6/1838: Applications to marry Maria Toomey, came free per Duchess of Northumberland, aged 18 - James was 34. July 1838: Married Maria Toomey, they had 10 children: 1838-1909: Thomas John 1843-1858: James 1845: Edmund 1847: Agnes (Agatha) 1849: Maria 1852-1881: Rosanna and George 2 others died in infancy. James work on the extensive gardens on Sir John Jamison's estate at Penrith. 13/7/1841: COF - Described as: 5'6" tall, dark sallow complexion, sandy brown hair, brown eyes, dimple in chin, mole on left cheek, another on the left side of neck, scar on left side of forehead. 1843: Family moved to Surry Hills. 1849: Family moved to Goulburn and then migrated to Port Phillip. The family resided at Fitzroy, James worked as a contractor. C1851: James set up a market garden in Jasper Road, East Bentleigh growing cabbages, cauliflowers, tomatoes, pumpkins and root vegetables. 1861: Opened “The Gardeners’ Arms” hotel, corner of McKinnon and Jasper Roads. 23/1/1875: James Bent died and was buried the following day.
