George BENTLEY was convicted at East Riding, Yorkshire, England 7 Jan 1819. 7 yr transportation sentence. Sent to Australia per the ship "Coromandel" arriving at Van Diemen's Land (Tasmania) 1820. Colony of VDL: Assigned to work services. 23 Aug 1821: Repeatedly absent from the services of his Master, Thomas Murphy. 50 lashes. 27 Nov 1820: charged with breaking the wall of H.M. Gaol at Hobart, with intent to escape. 7 days in cells, on bread & water. Ticket of Leave granted 19 Jan 1826: Certificate of Freedom issued. (Hobart Town Gazette 21 Jan 1826) 9 July 1826: charged with sheep stealing, along with Robert Grant, Wm Crest, from the property of Mr. Bryant at Jericho, VDL. Fully commited for trial. 10 Aug 1826: found guilty for above offence. All three received sentence of death. 8 Jan 1827: Executed, at Hobart Town. (ref. noted on his Conduct Record) Death register - RGD 34/1/1 no. 1389 & Colonial Times newspaper 12 Jan 1827.
