Morning Post London, England 16 Jul 1845 SUMMER ASSIZES.. ?— Luke Bentley and Timothy Booth were charged with highway robbery and violence. On the 29th of April, the prosecutor, Mr. Shackleton, was attending a shooting party at Allerton, near Clayton. He remained there over night, and the next night, at about twelve o'clock, was on his way home to Clayton, accompanied by several other persons. He had occasion to remain a little while behing on the road, and, thinking to overtake his companions, went across some fields for that purpose, and there fell in with four ment, two of whom were the prisoners at the bar. Bentley knocked him down after following him some distance, and gave him severe blows. The prosecutor exclaimed, "Don't kill me; if its my brass you want, take it." The other man (afterwards admitted to be Booth) then came up. Bentley then rifled Mr. Shackleton's pockets, and took from him six half-crowns and six or seven shillings, and both the men then ran away. The prisoners were found Guilty. Luke Bentley was listed as 27 years old on arrival in VDL. Arrived VDL per 'Pestongee Bomangee, May 1847. Native Place: Clifton, Yorkshire.
