The 'Ocean' was an English merchant ship and whaler built in 1794 at South Shields, England. In 1803 she accompanied the ship 'Calcutta' to Australia, acting as a transport supply ship. When the settlers abondoned Port Phillip, Melbourne, Victoria the ship transferred convicts, settlers and marines to Van Diemen's Land (Tasmania). In 1815, 1817 & 1823 the 'Ocean' transported convicts to New South Wales.

Old Bailey: THOMAS BENTON, Theft > pocketpicking, 4th December 1822. Offence: Theft > pocketpicking Verdict: Guilty Punishment: Transportation THOMAS BENTON was indicted for stealing, on the 30th of October, five shirts, value 25 s., and two handkerchiefs, value 2 s., the goods of Thomas Barnett ; and one pair of shoes, value 2 s., the goods of Sarah Spencer, from her person. Prisoner's Defence. I was going to the Black Horse, public-house, Gravel-lane, to see a man. The prosecutrix screamed out, and said she was robbed - I went up and asked who by; she said a man, and pointed towards the wall-several people ran, and I was taken. SARAH SPENCER. He did not come and ask who robbed me. I am certain of him. GUILTY. Aged 19. Transported for Life. Known also as Thomas BENSON. Thomas was 5'3" tall, brown complexion, black hair - a steel toy maker. 2/2/1826: Permission to marry Hannah Hutchins (Brothers 1824) aged 21 and on bond - Thomas (listed as 'Benton') was 25 and on bond, at Parramatta. 1826: Married at St John's, Parramatta. 1827: Mary A Benton 1829: William d 1831 3/8/1831: Sarah Ann Benson August 1832: Thomas died, aged 35(per NSW BDM, also listed as THOMAS BENSON) in the Lunatic Asylum, Liverpool. Do not know when Thomas entered the Asylum, on his death certificate his occupation is stated as a lunatic. Hannah gave birth in 1832 to Hannah Samuels, daughter of Henry Samuels. Hannah then married Henry Samuels (Prince of Orange 1820) in 1836.
