Family connections for Elizabeth (Berry) are: BERRY Elizabeth (Berry) was born in 1778or81or88. She was tried for theft from Mr & Mrs (Chesshyre) of Bennington Lordship Hertfordshire at Hertford Assizes on 19 1 1801, sentenced to 7years for having an unchristian attitude & arrived in NSW on 11 3 1803 after a voyage of 6months on HMS GLATTON (married 8days later). She married Charles (Whalan) sergeant exconvict on 19 3 1803/10 at St Phillips CofE Sydney/Parramatta & produced 7children. She became employed as a maid at Government House. By 1828 she was Free by Servitude. She died on 25 10 1866 age85or8 at Hartley Central Tablelands. [Some details taken from this Website] Charles (Whalan) son of James (Whalan) & Mabel (Bordeaux) was born on 5 10 1772 at St Clements Middlesex. He was convicted of poaching trout age14 at Westminster Sessions on 5 7 1787, sentenced to 7years, held 4years at Newgate prison & arrived in NSW as a convict on 9 7 1791 after a voyage of 6months on Fleet ship ALBERMARLE; he was 5.66' & was a weaver. He worked at Government Stores & was pardoned about December 1792. He was well educated, becoming an apprentice surveyor, & enlisted in NSW Corps 102nd Regiment on 11 2 1793 becoming Coporal in 1798 in Johnstons company & going on to become Commanding Sergeant of Governors bodyguard of Light Horse while with the 46th Regiment; he served in 73rd Regiment from 24 3 1793 (he was a sergeant ex convict in 1803/10), 46th Regiment from 22 4 1816, 48th Regiment from 25 8 1817; under & respected by Governors William (Bligh) Phillip Gidley (King), Lachlan (Macquarie). In 1798 he was granted 75acres w/2others. In 1806 he leased 38.5rods at Pitts Row. He gained the rank of Sergeant on 28 7 1808 & was detached to Piper/Lambs companies. In 1809 he was detached to McArthurs 8 company; also in this year he was granted 60acres & leased 38.75rods at South St & 51.75rods at Pitts Row. On 24 3 1810 he was transferred to 73rd Regiment. In 1821 he was with Governor Macquarie on farewell tour of colony on MIDAS to Tasmania. A son had 300acres near Parramatta-start of the Whalan locality. He retired/was discharged on 11 2 1823-inability & length of service-& was granted 500acres land at Fish River. In 1828, Free by Servitude, he was Pensioner living at 'Macquarie Park' Prospect. He died on 18 4 1839 at 'Macquarie Park' Prospect & was buried at CofE Parramatta.
