Saturday last three young men from London, named Henry Redman, David Smith, and Robert Berry, called at the Turnpike-house at St. John's, hear Bungay, to buy oranges. During the time that the keeper of the Gate was busy with them, and her own domestic affairs, they took an opportunity to rob the house of a canvas purse, containing 10/- in money and bills. The money being missed about half an hour after, information was given to the Police-officers, who immediately pursued and apprehended the thieves within the Cross-roads in Denton, 6 miles from St. John's. They were examined before Mathias Kerrison, Esq. When the greater part the money was found upon them, and they were committed to Ipswich Gaol. Bury and Norwich Post, 8 Apr 1818. Henry Kedman, David Smith, and Robert Berry, for stealing 8 one-pound notes and 40s. in silver, from the dwelling-house of John Evans, of St. John's, were each sentenced to be transported for seven years. The John Barry had arrived at Portsmouth on 16 April 1819 and on 20 April, 60 male convicts were embarked from the hulk Laurel and 80 from the hulk Leviathan in Portsmouth harbour. On 23 April 1819 two more convicts were sent on board the John Barry from the Leviathan. One of the passengers on board the John Barry was John Thomas Bigge, New South Wales’ first Royal Commissioner. The John Barry finally arrived at Port Jackson on Sunday 26 September 1819 (See The Campbelltown Convicts).
