Henry Berthold was a radical journalist until his conviction for shoplifting in 1833. His most famous exploit was to publish 10 issues of Berthold's Political Handkerchief in 1831. The Political Handkerchief was a radical newspaper printed on cotton in an attempt to evade the stamp duty on paper - the tax on knowledge that was used to try to prevent the working classes read about and question the workings of government.
