Convict Notes




Elizabeth Best was convicted at Devon Assizes on 19 March 1821 and was sentenced to transportation for 7 years. The indent for the ship "Mary Ann" has the information that Elizabeth Best had the alias Elizabeth McValy, she was aged 20 years, born at Plymouth, Devon, she had been employed as a servant; her height was 4 feet 11¼ inches, with a freckled complexion, brown hair, hazel eyes. In the 1822 muster Elizabeth was assigned to Magistrate Robert Lowe at Liverpool. Her future husband Thomas Vicary was also assigned to Magistrate Robert Lowe at this time. Elizabeth "Viccary" died in 1837. She was buried on 4 December 1837, the burial registered at St Matthews Church of England, Windsor. The register recorded that she had arrived on the "Mary Ann", she was aged 35, had been employed as a washerwoman, and had been living at Windsor.

Elizabeth married Thomas Vickery (Convict, Somersetshire, 1814) in 1823 at Parramatta. They had four children.
