It would appear that John had a common-law relationship, prior to the aforementioned marriage. A "Mary Rope" gave birth to Eliza Jane Rope on 28 Jan 1822, father given as John Bevan. A second daughter to John Bevan named Elizabeth Rope was born 9 May 1824. Both daughters were placed in the Parramatta Orphan Institution in 1825 and were mustered there in Nov 1828. Mary Rope, would be Esther Mary Rope (nèe gamble), the estranged wife of Robert Rope. She was a convict, transported on "Friens" in 1811. The relationship may have been carried on whilst he husband was absent in Tasmania. Robert had been 'cleared' of the willful murder of John Brazell in 1808 and then married Esther in 1812. The marriage did not last and he went to Tasmania. The two little daughters to John Bevan were recorded in the Census as 'Rope'.. [Ref R1333 & R1334 page 323]... Rope E.
