SHOCKING DEPRAVITY. Robert Biddle, a pretty and interesting looking boy of 14, was then brought up, and charged with burglary and theft. He pleaded guilty, His lordship remonstrated on the impropriety of pleading guilty to a Crime like burglary, capital in its nature, and exceedingly nice in its proof  Still he pleaded guilty. At last, after most patient and particular explanation his lordship persuaded him to plead guilty of the theft (of a shawl, a penknife, and some butter). The prosecutor  offered no proof, and he was of course acquitted of the burglary. Before pronouncing  sentence, his lordship called William Sheath, frame-work knitter in Ansty, into the witnesses’ box, and examined him upon oath, The prisoner had been his apprentice, and had left him only a week previously to the of April when the offence was committed. He had runaway. He had not been beaten, nor had an angry word been spoken   He had frequently committed offences before. He had stolen 19s. out of the witness's drawer, for which he was whipped through the market. The witness had frequently been at great pains to convince him of his misconduct  and to reform him, but he grew harder and harder, and his offences were progressively more and more heinous  He had a mother and a witness believed that he was by no means benefited by his conversation. After a very address, the learned Judge sentenced him, by the only means of saving him from greater crimes ... to 7 years’  transportation. Evening Mail, 4 Aug 1817.
