Elizabeth BEILBY was convicted at Beverley, Yorkshire, England on 6 April 1852 for Larceny - stealing money from her Master. Previously convicted under the name Maskell. 10 yr transportation sentence. Sent to Van Diemen's Land (Tasmania) per the ship 'Duchess of Northumberland' arriving 21 April 1853. Ship Surgeon's Report: "quiet, good". Aged 19yrs; dairymaid; single woman; 5'1 3/4" height; can read & write; Protestant. Native place of birth: Yorkshire, England. VDL: Assigned to work services in the Colony. 1853: assigned to Mrs. Benjamin, Liverpool St. Hobart. Found guilty of stealing a small sum of money - 18 mths hard labour sentence. 21 April 1855: Child Harriet BIELBY born at Hobart. Father's name not recorded. 28 Sept 1856: Child Harriet admitted to Queens Orphan School. (It was a Govt. requirement for young children to be admitted to the Orphanage.) 19 Dec 1856: Child Harriet died, at the Orphanage, of inflamation of the lungs. Buried, unmarked grave at St. Johns New Town cemetery. (ref. SWD 6.) 27 Oct 1857: Application for permission to marry - Elizabeth BEILBY (per Duchess of Northymberland) to John Murray WILLIAMS (free). Approved. (ref. 52/1/7 no. 533). 24 Nov 1857: Marriage of Elizabeth BIELBY to John Murray WILLIAMS, upholsterer, at Hobart. (ref. 37/1/16 no. 411)
