Convict Notes
Devon Lammas Asizes. David Birch, 33, pleaded guilty to the charge of stealing from the dwelling-house Win. Colston, at Totnes, the 10th of May last, a quantity of broad silks, silk shawls, Thibet wool shawls, China crape shawls, muslin collars and caps, printed muslin dresses, and many other articles, the property of the said Wm. Colston, value £300 ; and was sentenced to be transported for life. Exeter and Plymouth Gazette, 3 Aug 1833.
Absconded. Birch David, Moffatt (37), Thame, shoemaker, 5 feet 0 ¼ inch, fair comp., reddish hair, dark hazel eyes, nose small and sharp, mouth small, chin small, from Flinder's Island, in Van Diemen's Land, since August 2, 1836. NSW Govt Gazette, 6 Aug 1847.
David Birch was 33 years old when indicted for stealing silk, value £300 from the dwelling house of Mr Coulson of Totness. David was married, wife Susanna and 4 children at Totness. Described as a supposed Travelling Thief, David was 5"1/4" tall, dark hazel eyes, reddish hair, nose small and sharp, small couth and chin. 23/4/1839: Absconded from Flinder's Island in VDL, since 2/8/1836. 14/7/48: Still on the absconders list.
