Samuel Birch was 18 years old when he landed in Port Phillip. He left the Thomas Arbuthnot on his own account. In 1851 he is recorded as having found gold in Ballarat, with fellow exile, James Whelpdale (aka McPhinn). In 1855, he was charged with fellow exile, Joseph Woodland with stealing in a dwelling, in 1857 with drunkenness, and in 1859 with robbery. Samuel Birch died in 1862 from injuries sustained in a milling accident when his lower leg was torn off in a thrashing machine.
