New South Wales, Australia, Convict Indents. 1 of 11 male convicts transported from England on board Earl St, Vincent - Hobart Town and transported thence on the Ship; Portland for Sydney Indent No; 3 Name; Samuel Bird. Age; 44 Protestant, married - Wife & 4 children Native Place; Little Clapton Trade or calling; Farmer's man and Ploughman Offence; Stealing Gun powder Height; 5 ft. 9 1/4 in Eyes; Hazel Hair; Brown Completion; Fair Ruddy Remarks; Sent to Norfolk Island. 3 Dec 1826.
Samuel Bird was transported for stealing gunpowder and shot belt. He was born in Little Clacken, 13 miles from Colchester. He was a widower his wife dying in 1813 and he had 4 children. From his conduct record on arrival in VDL. A notorious bad character, committed for suspicion of murder. Once for sheep stealing, twice convicted of hand larceny. Has been at the treadmill twice. Good in goal. He spent 3 months in Chelmford goad for stealing a basket and smock frock. A woman had lived with him for 6 years before he was transported in 1826. There was no other information on his conduct or his assignments, after his arrival in VDL. Samuel was described as: 44 years old, high temples, scar on forehead, small scar just over left eyebrow outer ent, grey eyes, brown hair, 5'9 1/4" tall. 29/4/1852: Left from Launceston per "William" to Melbourne. Free.
