Biddy Birmingham was transported on the Margaret, departing 1st Sep 1838 and arriving 5th Jan 1839 with 170 passengers.
Built 1829 at Chepstow. 365 tons. Female prisoners were transported to New South Wales on the 'Margaret' in 1837, 1839 and 1840. The 'Margaret' was the last convict ship to transport female prisoners to New South Wales. Another voyage to Van Diemen's Land in 1843. The 1840 sailing also carried 17 free female passengers and one male. The registers of persons is not yet complete on this web site, so please note this if researching. (A work in progress.)

Convict Notes




The Convict Indentures state that Biddy Birmingham was 26 years old. She could neither read nor write; religion Protestant; status widow with 2 sons and 1 daughter and a native of County Galway. She was a dairy maid. Biddy was convicted of stealing clothes on 29 June 1838 and sentenced to 14 years. She had no prior convictions. She was 5 feet 1 3/4 inches; complexion dark sallow and much freckled; hair brown and eyes hazel. Transport number 62. Prisoner number 61-39.
