Morning Chronicle London, England 1 Mar 1839 ASSIZE INTELLIGENCE CROWN COURT. [Before Mr. Justice Erskine] William Bizzle was indicted for having, in November last, feloniously set fire to a barn, at Long Wittenham, containing a quantity of barley, the property of George Hayward. Mr. WALESBY and Mr. WILLIAMS appeared for the prosecution. The prisoner was undefended by counsel. A great number of witnesses were called for the prosecution. It appeared that the prisoner had recently before the fire took place been discharged from the service of the prosecutor ; that he was seen in the neighbourhood of the barn just before the fire broke out ; and that when taken up, immediately afterwards, he had a flint in his possession which appeared to have been recently struck. It further appeared that on examining some foot-marks leading to the barn they precisely corresponded with the shoes worn by the prisoner, who in consequence of lameness wore shoes of a peculiar make. It also appeared that the prisoner had said shortly before the fire took place, "If they did not look out, before winter was over, there would be a fire. I wonder if Mr. Hayward (the prisoner's master) would like to see that barn and and them rl#ks {newspaper not clear} on fire. I should like to see them all burnt to the ground." The prisoner, who has always since his committal, asserted that he was innocent, when called upon for his defence, again protested his innocence, and charged one Edward Bailey with having set fire to the barn. It was, however, clearly shown that Bailey was not in the neighbourhood of the fire at the time it happened. The prisoner had further alleged in his statement before the committing magistrate, that he had seen Bailey strike a light close to the barn, and that he had seized him, but afterwards released him at his earnest request. Mr. Justice ERSKINE summed up at considerable length with great care, and the jury immediately found the prisoner Guilty. Sentence deferred. __________ On the Hulk Justitia at Woolwich.
