John BLACK was convicted at Bristol, England on 8 Jan 1844 for stealing - a fowl. Previous convictions. 7yr transportation sentence. Sent to Van Diemen's Land (Tasmania) per the 'Theresa' arriving 4 July 1845. Single man; aged 20yrs; a shoemaker; 5'0 3/4"; Protestant; can read & write; sallow complexion; sandy hair; blue eyes; tatoos. Native place of Birth: Rotherithe, England. VDL: Pass Holder, 2nd Class. Worked in Hobart and Bothwell districts. Several notes of minor misconduct. 1 Dec 1846: Ticket of Leave granted. 31 Aug 1847: Application for Permission to marry - Mary Ann ABBOTT (Tory) to John Black (Theresa). Approved. 11 Oct 1847: Marriage. Mary Ann ABBOTT, aged 21yrs, spinster to John BLACK, aged 23yrs, shoemaker. At Parish Church of England, Bothwell, VDL. (ref. 37/1/6 no. 579) 8 Jan 1857: Free Certificate issued. Children: John BLACK - born 24 June 1848. Died 31 July 1848, aged 16 days, convulsions. Informant, father John Black. Bothwell district.
