John BLACK came to Australia as a seaman (crew) on the ship 'Susan' 1835/36. He stated he was a ship's carpenter (not a prisoner). He stayed on and lived in New South Wales, Australia (details not given) but on 7 Sept 1844 he was charged and convicted of Forgery, at Berrmia, NSW, court. Life sentence. He was then sent to Van Diemen's Land (Tasmania) per the ship 'Governor Phillip' arriving Hobart 23 Nov 1844. Personal details at 1844: Single man; ship's carpenter; aged 40yrs; Protestant; can read a little; 5'2 3/4"; fresh complexion; black hair; dk brown eyes. Native Place of birth: Leith, Scotland. VDL: 30 months Probation Period. Served at Cascades, sth Hobart & Brighton.
