Convict Notes

______________________________ James Blake, or Black, was transported as a young child. But he was not the only one on board – he was one of four children under the age of fifteen years, transported as convicts on the Queen. James was said to be 12. The others were John Healy also aged 12 convicted at Limerick with Mary Healey or Gill (presumably his mother, aged 35); David Fay aged only 11, (Dubiin 1791) and Charles Marshall aged 14. the Freemans Journal of Tues 5th October 1790 reported James being taken into custody: “James Blake, alias, Grumley, and Christopher McMahon, committed by Alderman Moncrieff, for cutting a pane of glass out of the window of John Ashe of Capel Street, and stealing a pair of silver buckles value 15s.” Christopher McMahon did not arrive in NSW. James arrived in NSW in September 1791 but died early in 1792, shortly after arrival. The NSW BDM registration number is 438/1792 V1792438 4, and the index shows "BLAKE James, an infant" . [i.e. under the legal majority of age]
