This day, the following prisoners, sentenced at the Assizes, were transmitted under an escort of the 37th Regiment, to the Hulk Surprise at Cove:— Edward Carroll, for Rape; James Blake, Horse stealing; William Daly, Larceny ; Martin Ryan, same ; John Connors, Pig stealing ; Michael Mara, Thomas Hayes, John Ward, Patrick Callaghan, Mathew Callaghan, and Jeremiah Sullivan, all for Larceny ; Denis Gorman, Pig stealing. The convict indentures state that James Blake was 46 years old. He could neither read or write; religion Catholic; status married with 2 children and a native of Limerick. He was a ploughman and could reap. He was convicted of horse stealing on 17 March 1828 at Limerick and sentenced to life. He had no prior convictions. Physical attributes - Height: 5 feet 6 inch; complexion ruddy; hair brown to grey and eyes grey. Transport number 167. He was assigned to Charles Whalen, Prospect. Received ticket of leave in 1837 (number 37/759). This Convict Indenture entry was blurred and difficult to read. Transport number and name checked against Ireland's Lord Lieutenant records.
