John BLAKELEY was convicted at Armagh, Ireland on 30 July 1840 for the murder of his own child - he stated the child had been taken ill by the small pox and was nearly dead. He had been recommended to bath the child, after the sun had gone down, which he did and the child died. He was a widower. Convicted and given a life sentence. Transported to Van Diemen's Land (Tasmania) per the 'British Sovereign' arriving 17 March 1841. Aged 26yrs; widower; a quarryman; Protestant; can read; 5'1"; reddish thin whiskers; lt brown hair; ruddy complexion; dk brown eyes. Native Place: Co. Armagh 2 yrs Probation Period in Colony. Stationed at Westbury (north of Colony) 1842: note in remarks as quiet and orderly. Also sick and in hospital. 12 Feb 1850: Ticket of Leave granted 14 June 1853: Conditional Pardon approved
