Charles Bland was transported on the Surrey Or Surry, departing 29th Sep 1818 and arriving 4th Mar 1819 with 160 passengers.
Built at Harwich in 1811 a square-rigged transport ship of 443 tons and copper lined she had two decks with a height between decks of 5 ft. 8 ins. In 1818, she had a major refit increasing the decks (and convict carrying capacity) to three. She was owned by the London firm of F. & C.F. Mangles.

Text type Trial account Defendants CHARLES BLAND Offences Theft > Theft from place Session Date 1st April 1818 Reference Number t18180401-8 Verdicts Guilty Punishments Transportation 536. CHARLES BLAND was indicted for stealing, on the 1st of February , 50lbs. of lead, value 5s., belonging to John Johnson , and then fixed to a certain building of his . SECOND COUNT, for feloniously ripping and cutting the said lead, with intent to steal it. JOHN JOHNSON. On Sunday the 1st of February, about five o'clock in the afternoon, I was in my warehouse, in Scotland-yard , and saw the prisoner come on the roof, and make use of a chisel and knife, which had been left there the night before-he cut about 50lbs. of lead off. I called to him, and he ran away. I got on the roof and said I would shoot him if he ran, he then surrendered. I gave him in charge. I had lost lead before, which made me watch. The lead was fixed to the building. (Property produced and sworn to.) GUILTY . Aged 20. Transported for Seven Years . First Middlesex Jury, before Lord C.J. Ellenborough.
