Convict Notes
Joseph Blaxter was 21 years old on arrival in VDL and was transported for ‘Stealing books from Blackenham Church, Norwich. Joseph had a previous conviction for stealing bread. Joseph was 5’5, illiterate, single, protestant, fair complexion, light brown hair, brown eyes, tattoos. Mother: Hannah Sisters: Mary Ann, Hannah – at native place. 19/7/1852: TOL 13/7/1852: Certificate. Joseph then made his way to Eden, NSW. 30/5/1864: Married Mary Ann Maria Stone at Eden, NSW. They had 9 children. Maria was born in Sydney in 1842 and died in 1919 and was buried at Waverley Cemetery, NSW. 2/5/1862 Sydney Morning Herald: Charles Alexander and Joseph Blaxter were indicted for stealing from the person of John Triggle in the ” Carrier’s Arms,” Eden, in the month of October last, sundry cheques ; the second count charged them with receiving the same, knowing them to have been stolen. Verdict, guilty. Sentence. twelve months each imprisonment in Parramatta gaol”. 3/5/1901 Bombala Times: On Thursday last, Mr Joseph Blaxter, an old and widely known resident died after a lingering and painful illness of several months duration.
