Convict Notes
On Saturday night last, three persons were committed to the Chesterfield of Correction, calling themselves Joseph Bliss, William Simmons, and William Owen, horse-dealers, on a charge of defacing, altering and passing a note of the Wirksworlh Bank. Sheffield Independent, 23 Feb 1822. At the above assizes eleven other prisoners received sentence of death but have since been reprieved, viz: John Marsden and William Blick for highway robbery near Matlock; Joseph Bliss, William Owen for and forging certain pound notes, the bank of Messrs Arkwright, Toplis and Co, Wirksworth; Nottingham Journal, 30 March 1822. Joseph Bliss, (23) William Owen, (29) and Wm. Simmonds, (30) for altering and forging one-pound notes of the bank of Mcssr . Arkwright Tonlis, and Co. of Wirksworth, into notes purporting to be the value of five and ten pounds— Biiss and Owen condemned: Simmons admitted evidence. Sheffield Independent, 30 March 1822.
