Convict Notes

Woodley Body's crime was receiving 5 bushels of wheat knowing it to be stolen. He was a miller. He died at Fairy Meadow Farm in Wollongong, New South Wales in 1854 aged 63 without seeing his wife and children in England again. He and Elizabeth had produced ten children, the youngest of whom, also called Elizabeth, was two years old when her father was sent to the Antipodes in the sailing vessel Hermione in 1833. Like two or three of her siblings, she died in childhood, aged 4. Woodley would have been free to return to England at the end of his sentence but chose not to - perhaps to be with his son, also called Woodley, who was the subject of a life sentence (for which he received a pardon from the King) and was prohibited from returning to England.
