Mary Ann Williams, a child aged 10 years, sworn - I am in the service of Mrs. Hoddell; I remember on a Saturday morning, a little before Christmas, I was standing at the back-yard of Mrs. Hoddle's house; I had the baby of Mrs. Bowles in my arms ; it was just before 8 o'clock ; deceased was cleaning the verandah; the prisoner came up and wanted to speak to her; she told him to go away and be went away ; about 5 minutes afterwards he came again with a letter which she refused to take ; he then jumped over into the verandah ; Sarah Bowles ran up into the corner of the verandah, and tried to get over it, but she could not ; the prisoner then put his hat on the ground ; pulled a knife from his sleeve and stabbed her with it ; she screamed and I ran over to Mr. Flood for assistance; Mr. Flood lives nearly opposite ; he came and I then saw the deceased take a knife out of her side, and throw it over the verandah ; she was covered with blood and so was the verandah. James Beckett, sworn - I am a groom in the service of Mr. Dargin; about 8 o'clock on the Saturday morning, I saw a scuffle in Mrs. Huddle's verandah, between the deceased and prisoner ; I saw prisoner with a knife in his hand, and I said to him, you villain, are you going to murder the woman? he made me no answer ; I was afraid to go up to him at first, and threw two or three bricks at him ; one of them struck him, and he seemed to desist for a moment; I ran into the verandah and laid hold of him ; struggled with him, and succeeded in extricating him from the woman ; the woman was bloody and so was the verandah.
