Convict Notes
Summer Assizes. Henry Bolton, 24, and Samuel Lemon, 17, charged with having stolen from the parish of Singleton, two geldings, one saddle, two bridles ... Sussex Advertiser, 16 Aug 1824. ... prisoners, sixteen of whom were capitally convicted and received sentence of Death, viz. :—Henry Bolton, aged 24, and Samuel Lemon, 17, both labourers, for stealing from a stable at Singleton, two horses, (valuable hunters,) a saddle, two bridles, and other things, the property of Walter Burrell, ~ one of our County Representatives; and a coat, the property of George Norris, hostler at a public house, where the robbers stopped after they had stolen the horse. Sussex Advertiser, 23 Aug 1824. On Saturday se'nnight, a reprieve arrived at Horsham, for Henry Bolton and Samuel Lemon, who at our late Assizes were condemned to be hanged for horse-stealing, and left for execution. Sussex Advertiser, 13 Sep 1824.
Escape from His Majesty’s Gaol, Horsham. Whereas on the night between Thursday the 10th. and Friday the 11th of June, Two Prisoners of the Names of HENRY BOLTON and EDMUND BROWN, made their Escape from the above Prison.—The said HENRY BOLTON, charged with Horse Stealing, aged 24, feet inches high, fair complexion, gray eyes, brown hair, a cut on the Ist and fingers of the left hand, & pointed nose.—EDMUND BROWN, aged 24, charged with escape from the Hulks, feet 5 inches high, fair complexion, dark hair, dark eyes, light eyebrows, pointed nose and rather large mouth. Reward of TWENTY POUNDS will be paid on each of the above Prisoners being apprehended, and lodged in any of his Majesty's Gaols, by me, JOHN SMART, Keeper Horsham, June 11th, 1824.
