Theft; simple larceny (from 1827). 16th September 1839 Text type Trial account Defendants EDWARD BOND Offences Theft > Simple larceny Session Date 16th September 1839 Reference Number t18390916-2627 Verdicts Guilty Punishments Transportation 2627. EDWARD BOND was indicted for stealing, on the 3rd of September, 1 coat, value 7s., the goods of Edward Burton Hensley; and that he had been before convicted of felony. GEORGE URIDOE . I am coachman to Mrs. Watts. This coat belonged to Edward Burton Hensley, her footman. On the 3rd of September, the carriage was standing in Chandos-street, Cavendish-square—the footman is coat was on the rumble behind—I was on the box, and felt a motion—I turned, and saw the prisoner with the coat under his arm—I turned, and drove the carriage after him—he put the coat on, and as soon as he saw me he pulled it off, and ran away—he was stopped—I asked him if he was not ashamed of himself, and he begged to be let go. EDMUND GREENING . I was passing through Mansfield-street, and heard a person call, "Stop him"—the coachman pointed to the prisoner, who was running with the coat under his arm—he threw it down, and I caught him. PATRICK JENNINGS . I am a policeman. I took the prisoner, and have the coat. RICHARD WARD . I produce a certificate of the prisoner's former conviction—(read)—the prisoner is the person. GUILTY Aged 18.— Transported for Seven Years.
