Colonial Secretary's Office, Sydney 3d November, 1835. EIGHTY POUNDS REWARD, OR A CONDITIONAL PARDON. WHERE AS it has been represented to the Government that Warrants have issued on the charge of Cattle Stealing, for the apprehension of James Bonnell, George Trapp, and Mark Lyland, or Liddane, free by servitude, whose descriptions are annexed ; together with one Edward McDonald supposed to be free, but whose identity is not yet ascertained. — Notice is hereby given, that any Person who shall cause either of the said Offenders to be apprehended and lodged in any of His Majesty's Gaols will be allowed, if free, a Reward of Twenty Pounds, or if a Prisoner of the Crown, he will be recommended to His Majesty for a Conditional Pardon. DESCRIPTION. James Benell, per ship Mangles (1), was tried at Salop Assizes, 4th August, 1819; sentence 14 years. Native Place, Litchfield; Calling, Labourer; Year of Birth, 1802. Height, 5 feet 2½ and upwards Complexion, Dark Pale, Hair, Black; Eyes, Dark. General Remarks, has not applied for a Certificate.

James obtained his ticket of leave on 6 July 1829 and certificate of freedom on 7 April 1837. He married in 1835 to Charlotte (nee Brown). They had six children in Australia. 1 in NSW and 5 in Victoria. James was listed as a Licensed Victualler (Publican). In 1847 he returned to Walsall, Staffordshire where he had another son. In 1849 he and his family returned to South Australia. Another 5 children were born.
