The 'Ocean' was an English merchant ship and whaler built in 1794 at South Shields, England. In 1803 she accompanied the ship 'Calcutta' to Australia, acting as a transport supply ship. When the settlers abondoned Port Phillip, Melbourne, Victoria the ship transferred convicts, settlers and marines to Van Diemen's Land (Tasmania). In 1815, 1817 & 1823 the 'Ocean' transported convicts to New South Wales.

The Surrey Assizes closed on Saturday. The capital convicts were nineteen in number, viz … William Booker, … for burglary and stealing in a dwelling house; .. The Learned Judge, in a most impressive manner, admonished Simpson and Cook to prepare for their fate, as no mercy could reasonably be extended to them on this side of the grave; the others were reprieved. Morning Herald, 8 Apr 1817. Among the prisoners capitally convicted at the last Kingston Assizes, was William Booker, of Reigate, sawyer, for a burglary in the dwelling-house of John Longhurst, at Ockley, whose shop was robbed of drapery, hosiery. and other articles, to the value of 100?. a very small proportion of which, however, has been recovered by Mr. Longhurst. Windsor and Eton Express, 13 April 1817.
