James BOROUGHS was convicted at Dinapore, India, Court Martial on 16 July 1844 for insubordination - striking an officer with a stick. 1st Offence. 14 yr transportation sentence. Sent to Van Diemen's Land (Tasmania), Australia per the ship 'Tenasserim' arriving 20 Dec 1844. 52nd British Regiment Aged 24yrs; labourer; single man; Roman Catholic; can read & write; 5'7" height; fair complexion; dk brown hair; blue eyes. Native place of birth: Co. Carlow, Ireland (ref. Convict record) Father: John Mother: Frances Colony of VDL: 21 months Probation Period Station Gang: Cascades (just south of Hobart) 1846: Assigned as a Constable, Hobart 1847: Assigned as a Constable, George Town Several records of misconduct & punishments. 1848: George Town - drunk. To be dismissed from the Police Force. 1850: Launceston 1851: Longford 16 Dec 1851: Ticket of Leave granted 10 Oct 1854: Ticket of Leave revoked 27 March 1855: Absconded
