6/2/1819 Ipswich Journal: QUARTER SESSIONS – At Peterborough Quarter Sessions, Newcomb BOSS and George YOUNG, two gypsies, were put on their trial for stealing a gelding, the property of Mr SPEECHLEY of Peterborough. The trial occupied the attention of the Court for several hours, after which, the Jury returned a verdict against both the prisoners of guilty, and sentence of death was passed upon them. The Boss (Bosswell) family, were notorious gypsy horse thieves and dealers, they plied their dubious trade across throughout Norfolk and Suffolk, into Northamptonshire and Lincolnshire and further afield into Yorkshire.- Newcombe Boss said to have been born C1795 (occupation was a 'Tinsmith') had at least two children in England: Charlotte Boswell c.03.11.1813 Swineshead Lincs d/o Newcomb and Mary Lizzy Boss or Boswell c.03.11.1816 Ilketshall St Margarets Sfk d/o Newcombe and Sarah. He was attributed more than one wife, as well as Ann (Bobbum Smith) a Mary and a Sarah! 5/2/1841: CP Newcombe returned to England and used the name Jones, he was in Tasmania and was called Newcombe (he had nephews and other relatives also transported to Tasmania) ended up in New South Wales he presumably got a ticket of leave, where he worked for various employers before returning to England.
