Elizabeth BOUCHER also known as Elizabeth SMITH. Hobart Town Gazette, 11 March 1825: Elizabeth Smith, 5 ft. 4 in. light brown hair, blue eyes, 23 years of age, tried at London June 1821, sentence 14 years, native place London, arrived at this Colony per Mary Ann 1822, formerly in the service of Mr. Peevor, Coal River, held a ticket of leave which she forfeited, absconded from Hobart Town Feb. 1824. —£2 Reward.




Elizabeth BOUCHER was convicted at Newcastle upon Tyne, England in 1821 for Larceny. Gaol Report: "confirmed thief". 7 yr transportation sentence. Sent to Van Diemen's Land (Tasmania) per the ship "Mary Anne" 1822. Colony of VDL: Assigned to service work. Several records of misconduct and punishments. 1822: Stealing. To wear an iron collar for 7 days and sit in the Stocks for 1 hour a day for 3 days. 1823: Sent to the Female Factory, Hobart. 1825: Escape from the Female Factory. 14 days on bread & water. 1828: Abscond from Master's service. 6 mths at Female Factory and have head shaved. APPLICATION FOR PERMISSION TO MARRY: 30 June 1830 - James ELY (Guildford) to Elizabeth BOUCHER (Mary Ann). Approved. MARRIAGE: 27 Sept 1830 - James ELY (Ticket of Leave status) to Elizabeth BOUCHER (convict) at St. Johns Church of England, Launceston. (ref. 36/1/1 no. 1503. CHILD: Ann ELY born 3 May 1834 at Launceston. Parents - James & Elizabeth ELY. Farmers. (ref. 32/1/3 no. 1064) HUSBAND - James ELY was convicted as a bushranger and accessory to murder in 1838.
