William stole 45 sheep, he was sentenced to death, this was commuted to life in the Penal Colony. He was sent to the Prison Hulk 'Ganymede" moored at Chatham on 19 Sept. 1827. On the 19th March he was listed for transportation to Australia. He arrived in Sydney, Australia per the Albion (2) 3rd. Nov. 1828. On the 26th Dec. 1836 William was issued a ticket of leave. The Albion had 192 convicts on board. The voyage took 155 days. There were 4 deaths.
William settles in Wodonga once he earnt his ticket of leave. He had 17 children and to this day there is a road called Bown Road in Wodonga. It was named after William in recognition of his contribution yto settling the area.
